First Day at School: Top Tips for Parents

Posted by Amanda Jenner

The first day at primary school is a significant milestone, both for your child and for you as a parent. It’s a day filled with excitement, nervousness, and a whole lot of emotions. Ensuring that this day goes smoothly can set the tone for a positive school experience.

Here’s how to make that first day as stress-free and successful as possible.

1. Communication Is Key

Your child is entering a brand new environment, and it’s normal for them to feel a bit anxious. Open communication is essential. Talk to your child about what to expect on their first day—who their teacher will be, what kind of activities they might do, and the friends they’ll make. Encourage them to share any worries or questions they have, and reassure them that it’s okay to feel nervous.

2. Pack Spare Clothes in Their Bag

Accidents can happen, especially on the first day when everything is so new. Pack a set of spare clothes in your child’s bag, just in case. This will not only help them feel more secure but also prevent any unnecessary embarrassment if something does go wrong.

3. Prepare the Night Before

Mornings can be hectic, especially on the first day of school. Lay out your child’s clothes the night before to avoid any last-minute rush. Make sure their school bag is packed with everything they need—lunch, snacks, water bottle, and any school supplies. This simple preparation can make the morning run much more smoothly and help start the day on a positive note.

4. Keep Goodbyes Short and Sweet

It’s tempting to give long, reassuring cuddles at the school gate, but this can sometimes make your child more anxious. Keep your farewell short, positive, and confident—reassure your child that you’ll be back to pick them up at the end of the day. Too much fuss at drop-off can inadvertently make them worry more about being apart from you.

5. Get into a Bedtime Routine

A good night’s sleep is crucial, especially before such an important day. Establish a calming bedtime routine a few nights before school starts. Let your child know that it’s normal to feel a mix of nerves and excitement and that getting plenty of rest will help them feel ready to tackle their big day.

6. Talk About Their Day

When your child comes home, sit down with them and discuss their day. Ask open-ended questions to encourage them to share their experiences—what they enjoyed, what was new, and if anything made them nervous. Reassure them by addressing any worries they might have and celebrate their successes, no matter how small.

7. Encourage Independence

Starting school is a big step towards independence. Encourage your child to take charge of small tasks, like putting on their own coat or tidying up their bag. These little moments of responsibility can boost their confidence and help them feel more in control of their new environment.

8. Don’t Forget to Ask About the Toilet

It’s easy to assume that your child will remember to use the toilet at school, but it’s worth asking them directly. Check in with them at the end of the day to make sure they felt comfortable going to the toilet and remind them that it’s okay to ask their teacher if they need to go.

9. Pack Easy-to-Open Snacks

Including snacks in your child’s lunchbox or bag is a great idea, but make sure they’re easy for little hands to open. Avoid overly sugary options that could lead to a mid-day energy crash—healthy, easy-to-open snacks like fruit slices, crackers, or small sandwiches are ideal. Before the big day, practice with your child to ensure they can open any packets or containers by themselves, helping them feel more independent during snack time.

10. Accidents Can Happen

Whether it’s a toilet mishap or a spilled lunch, accidents are a normal part of the first day. Remind your child that these things happen to everyone and that there’s nothing to worry about. Pack a set of spare clothes and let them know it’s okay to ask for help if they need it.

Starting school is a big adventure, and with preparation, you can help your child feel confident and ready for the journey ahead.

Remember, the first day is just the beginning—there will be plenty of time to learn, grow, and make new friends!
