This Could Save Your Child's Life at the Pool

Posted by Amanda Jenner

As the warm summer months approach, many of you will be looking forward to spending time by the pool. Swimming is a fantastic way to keep cool and have fun, but safety should always be a top priority, especially for parents with toddlers.

If you missed it, we showed a sneak peek of our new line of bright and sun-safe swimwear on our socials, designed to keep your little ones protected and visible.

Here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable pool experience for you and your toddler this summer.

Sun Protection 🌞

Choose Sun-Safe Swimwear:
Our new Kiddi swimwear line is designed with sun safety in mind, featuring UPF 50+ fabric to provide maximum protection against harmful UV rays. Ensuring your child wears protective swimwear is a simple way to significantly reduce the risk of sunburn and skin damage.

Apply Sunscreen:
Even with sun-safe swimwear, it's important to apply a strong SPF sunscreen on any exposed skin. Reapply every two hours, or more often if your child is swimming or sweating.

Provide Shade:
Find a shaded area near the pool with umbrellas or pop-up tents. Encourage your child to take breaks from direct sun exposure and cool off in the shade regularly.

Visibility

Bright and Visible Swimwear:
Our new swimwear comes in bright, eye-catching colours that make it easier to spot your child in the pool. High visibility is crucial for keeping track of your little one in a busy pool environment. There are colours to avoid when choosing swimwear for your child, especially avoid dark colours like navy or purple as these can blend in with the pool floor.

Supervision:
Never leave your toddler unattended near water. Ensure any adults you are with are prepared to be a “water watcher” and ensure someone is watching the pool at all times.

Use of Floatation Devices:
While floatation devices such as arm bands or swim vests can provide extra security, they should not replace active supervision. Ensure these devices are well-fitted and appropriate for your child's size and swimming ability.

Pool Behaviour

Teach Pool Rules:
Educate your toddler about basic pool safety rules, such as no running, no pushing, and staying away from the pool’s deep end. Reinforce these rules consistently to help your child understand their importance.

Entering and Exiting the Pool:
Show your child the safest way to enter and exit the pool, such as using the steps or ladders. Encourage them to always enter the water feet first to prevent injuries.

Extra Tips

Hydration is Key:
Spending time in the sun and water can lead to dehydration. Ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids before, during, and after pool time. You can't go wrong with water!

Consider Learning CPR:
In the event of an emergency, knowing CPR can be life-saving. Many local organisations offer CPR certification courses for parents and caregivers. Being prepared can make all the difference in a critical situation. Best to be safe than sorry.

Secure the Pool Area:
If you have a pool at home, ensure it is properly fenced with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Pool alarms and safety covers are additional measures to prevent unsupervised access to the pool area.
